A show reel has to be many things for many people, and somehow answer every question they might have about your capabilities, your experience, your “natural” look and who you are as artists and individuals at this point in your career.

I guess this is why almost every reel is doomed to failure, as the viewer either sees what they want to see or disregards it within a few seconds. Often what a potential client wants to see is an incredible video or film produced for their closest competitor/best friend for a minimal budget that shows off a product or idea exactly like theirs.

Of course, this would be a mind numbingly dull reel for anyone else to watch – and we arty types want to show some of our prettier pictures and favorite gigs… which is what we do in our reels! It’s why we made three reels (and admittedly it was a while ago in a quiet period), and used a different approach for each of them. Hopefully one will hit the mark, but usually we prefer to pick out one or two videos that are appropriate for what you might want to do and show you them instead/as well  🙂
